Arroyo Willows finally planted

We planted 2 Arroyo Willows today in the backspace - no more than 15 feet apart. After they have been soaking in water for a few weeks, they grew roots. Arroyo roots are very large, and may damage other plants growing in the area.

The small 12" plants were planted on December 28 near the Atlas Nature preserve. In 10 years or so, they will become full grown trees, and most of the land will be overgrown by native plants. The pond near the willows is, however, not filled. When it is, some lily pads will be planted, along with some fresh duckweed.

The plan for the pond in 2024:

  1. the pond (which is not filled yet) will be filled

  2. The toyon bushes (which were recently transplanted) will be in the ground once they reach about 8 inches in height. They are about 1/4 inches now

  3. Hopefully, we'll grow some moss to put on the rocks and some native horsetails to put near the pond

  4. We'll also grow some California raspberries, which tend to do well near riparian areas. Of course, we won't have any berries to eat because the birds will eat it.

The plan for the garden in 2024:

  1. Our 4 Lemmon's Willow cuttings will root. We'll plant them near the pond, and we'll have them grow around the pergola.

  2. Our California Incense Cedar, Jeffrey Pines, Norway Spruce and Grand Fir plants will be repotted into bigger pots. They might be big enough to become Christmas Trees. One Norway Spruce, which was grown from a bonsai kit, will be treated like a bonsai, while the other three will be grown to full sized trees.

  3. (This may even be a goal for 2025): Our Saguaro Cactus and Joshua seeds will sprout. We will plant them in the TMAD.

  4. Our Dragonfruit plants become tall enough to rap around a fence.

  5. Our pomelo and apple plants will become tall enough to start producing fruit. Because it is so small, it is unlikely to produce fruit in the next year.

  6. We hope that our fig seeds we got from dried figs will sprout. Figs are usually not grown from seeds; they are grown from cuttings. A special fig wasp has to pollinate the fig in order for them to contain viable seeds.

  7. Hopefully, the cacti in the TMAD will flower. I have never seen them do so before.

And that is it!
