One out of 2 of our grape plants was planted yesterday in the backyard! This plant measures 18 inches tall, and was cut from a giant grape plant in Calistoga back in April. The specimen is a wine grape, but can be used to make juice. Table grapes are less sweet and bigger, while wine grapes are smaller and contain high sugar levels.
I had to trim the grape flowers
Remember the grape cuttings in the last post had flowers? I had to cut them off. The reason why is because the plant was focusing energy on making fruit, instead of making roots. After I snipped off some extra branches and all the flowers, the plant started producing small roots:
The second cutting has suffered damage from excessive sunlight, and it has been stripped of all it's green branches.
This cutting will not produce fruit this season, but in 2 years or more we may have grapes.
