Bye Bye TMAD

Yes - we are getting rid of the TMAD but we are going to turn it into something else. Read on to figure out.

REASONS WHY THE TMAD IS FAILING

  1. Humidity at night escapes into the desert, moisturizing the cactus. Because of that, new cacti

  2. The TMAD stays very cold during foggy days.

  3. Even if we had had a heater, it would be hard to make the humidity lower during the night.

WE ARE GOING TO TURN IT INTO A HAWAII JUNGLE HABITAT.

  1. Hawaii is humid and located near the ocean like San Francisco. These forests However, desert climates are hard to replicate; they are hot, dry, and located far away from the ocean

  2. The TMAD gets half the average sunlight each day than the real desert due to a tree covering the greenhouse. Hawaii forests are mostly covered in trees and shade. They get filtered sunlight.

  3. A heater and humidifier can be installed in the TMAD to make it more Hawaii-like, but the door has to be closed for most of the day to keep out humidity in order to simulate a desert.

  4. Hawaiian plants (pothos, monstera, orchids, ferns, etc.) can easily be obtained (as most plants of the island are common houseplants) from home or from a local nursery, or propagated from plant cuttings around their native ranges.

  5. It will be more attractive to visitors than a desert.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  1. On June 21, the last cacti were relocated to a plant bin in the CCAG.

  2. On June 22, the first pothos and ZZ plants were planted.

June 24 week: More Pothos and ZZ plants will be planted

July 1 - July 19: Pothos and ZZ plants will be left to get acclimated to the greenhouse.

July 20-July 25: Giant pothos, bromeliads and other tropical plants will be planted.
